UK Splash Class Nationals held at Brightlingsea Sailing Club

Weather ruled the roost at the 2004 Splash nationals at Brightlingsea Sailng Club on the Saturday and Sunday 12/13 September.
Saturday opened with wind strengths of a steady force 5 with gusts to 6, the OOD wisely deciding to carry out racing in the Colne estuary . Courses were a bit constrained as a result with short windward legs.
As a result of the strong Dutch presence (28 sailors) there were 57 starters in the Splash class, the course being shared with the Mirror fleet which caused some minor problems to both the leaders and stragglers. Getting onto the start line was more important than a good position as the conditions were difficult, with both strong winds and tide conditions to cope with.
The sailors had one and a half laps of an Olympic course, the conditions favouring the strong Dutch contingent, Remco Hoeffnagel winning from Rinse Ubbink with Chris Schonhut in sixth being the first British boat home.
The second race was run in similar conditions with the wind increasing slightly. Rik van Loo won the second race with Heilke Dykstra second and Rinse Ubbink third, Tim Frary in eight being the best British entry.
Sunday openedwith not a cloud in the sky but with wind strengths about the same as the previous day. The forecast however was for stronger winds so after about an hour, the OOD decided to abandon racing for the day, so the overall results were decided on Saturdays races.
Rinse Ubbink from the Nederlands won from Hielke Dykstra and Remco Hoeffnagel third. Best British entry and National champion was Chris Schonhut in sixth place overall and Louise Clayton in 31st being the best British girl.
