M40 Guide
|
 |
I have divided the M40 into four sections: A,
B, C and D. Each of the four sections has four M40 junctions located along
its length (16 in total) . There are separate maps for each of the 16 junctions.
The four strip maps, plus the 16 individual junction maps, identify a host
of useful recommendations and essential motorists’ facilities. The 16 junction
maps show the locations of the nearest public toilets (if any), service stations
(most with toilets), public telephones, post offices, public houses (when
open they have toilets too) and hospitals. I have also identified which public
toilets have facilities for the disabled and which service stations are open
24 hours a day. In addition, in each of the four sections, I have made eight
hotel and restaurant recommendations. Two of the eight in each section are
bed and breakfast establishments with just a handful of bedrooms (BB1 and
BB2); these recommendations are especially pleasing. Each one makes a good
“base” (sans restaurant as the French would say) . I have also recommended,
in each of the four sections, two restaurants where the chef’s skills have
been personally tried and tested (R1 and R2). Seven of the eight have
accommodation available. The range of culinary ability is wide. Cooking skills
have been rated under five categories: 1 simple; 2 good; 3 very good; 4
excellent; S exceptional. I have divided the remaining four hotels in each
section into two groups of two each. Two are large hotels with 75 to 180
bedrooms, ideal for those seeking business and convention facilities (HL1
and HL2); some of the eight also offer exceptional weekend price bargains.
The two other hotels in each section are smaller establishments with between
one and three dozen bedrooms (HS1 and HS2) . All the hotels have dining rooms
but don’t expect culinary fireworks at any of the sixteen. For those of you
who would like a day out, or can spare an hour or two for a break from driving,
I have provided details of eight “detours” within each section (a to h);
these lead you to both man-made sites and to some of nature’s more interesting
landscapes. Many of the 32 “detours” are ideal for family visits. |
